Winners Milan Design Award 2018

The winner of the Milan Design Award 2018 is: “Monster Cabaret” by Maxim Velcovský for Lasvit, with the participation of Alessandro Mendini, the Campana Brothers, Yabu Pushelberg, Nendo, Fabio Novembre, Daniel Libeskind, Maarten Baas, Moritz Waldemayer , and Maurizio Galante. “For the project’s extraordinary ability to make the products dialogue with the context and the spectators, staging in an ironic and unsettling way the marvels of matter and creativity in all its nuances.”

 

The jury consists of Han Han, Strategic Design researcher in China, Stefania Siani vice president and executive creative director of DLV BBDO advertising agency, Andrea Davide Cuman, lecturer and researcher in communication, media and city; Valentina Ventrelli, expert in contemporary aesthetics and Paolo Ferrarini, content curator and university lecturer.

 

For this edition of Milan Design Award, the jury members tried to identify some essential aspects among the 1500 events in the city: involvement, vision, contemporaneity, relationship with the city and aesthetics. “We are very satisfied with this edition of the Milan Design Award,” says Valentina Ventrelli, historical member of the scientific committee of the Milan Design Award. “The founding principal as well as the “original” objective of this award is to unveil, through a selection of projects, on one hand the main areas of research and experimentation in design and creativity and on the other, underline the mood that the city of Milan shows in relation to this week of opulent exploratory energy. This year’s winning projects,” continues Ventrelli, “give us a panorama full of quality, processes as well as products, highlighting a strong desire for substance and innovation, however not neglecting playfulness, lightness and dream.”

 'The Diner'  by Surface Magazine in collaboration with David Rockwell and 2x4


For the quality of the environment and for the kind of involvement that suggests an estranging and evocative space/ time journey. Best Engagement 2018 goes to “The Diner” by David Rockwell + Surface with 2x4. A contemporary interpretation of the unforgettable American diner, in via Ferrante Aporti 15, Ventura Centrale until Sunday April 22nd at 18pm.

For the courageous intuition in proposing a physical, archaic and amusing interaction, giving a soul to chair -an archetype of design. The Unicorn 2018 goes to "Giants with Dwarf" by Stephan Hürlemann for horgenglarus. The dreamy installation of wooden giants celebrates the ancient production of tables and chairs by Swiss company, in via Ferrante Aporti 9, Ventura Centrale until Sunday April 22nd at 18pm.

The Milano Design Awards winner, Lasvit - a Czech glass manufacturer - brings on show a performance made of animals, outcasts, anti-heroes and fantastic creatures, all made of glass. Every hour the visitors may witness the representation of the monstrosity of our times and assist to a show with burlesque and peculiar dances (in Piazza Beccaria at the Teatro Gerolamo until April 22). 

'Transitions' by Panasonic Design


For the project's ability to evoke an experience of technology as much intangible as much unique and relevant enveloping the visitor and proposing a sensory orchestration with an extraordinary impact. Best Technology 2018 goes to “Transitions” by Panasonic Design.” A spectacular installation, which exploits Panasonic technologies in air conditioning, image processing, sound, lighting and even personal care - at the Pinacoteca di Brera, in the Brera Design District.

For having proposed a concrete and sustainable solution in the architectural project in a perfect balance between material quality and emotional experience. Best Sustainability 2018 goes to “3D housing 05” by Massimiliano Locatelli of CLS with Italcementi, Arup and Cybe. A prototype of a house built with 3D printing and cement powders, in Piazza Beccaria.

'3D Hidden Senses' by Design Center of Sony Design


For the rediscovery of the senses through the endless interactions with everyday objects, transformed into sophisticated gaming opportunities and "spells", where technology is no longer scary. The Milan Design Award Best Playfulness 2018 goes to "Hidden Senses ", from the design center of Sony Design. Five rooms: in each a different case study: moving from one to the other the “Hidden Senses” are gradually revealed - in Via Savona, 56 Milan Space Makers for Tortona Design Week.
